Skin, Bone & Soft Tissue Cancer
It encompass a range of malignancies affecting various parts of the body.
Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer and includes three major types:
1.Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC):
- The most common type, usually developing in sun-exposed areas. It grows slowly and rarely spreads.
2.Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC):
- Also common and often found insun-exposed areas, SCC can be more aggressive than BCC and may spread to other parts of the body.
3.Melanoma:
- The most dangerous form of skin cancer, melanoma arises from melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment. It can develop anywhere on the body and is more likely to spread if not caught early.
Bone Cancer
Bone cancer is relatively rare and can be classified into:
1. Osteosarcoma:
- The most common type of bone cancer, typically affecting the long bones in the arms and legs, and often occurs in children and young adults.
2.Chondrosarcoma:
- Originating in the cartilage, this cancer usually affects adults and can occur in any part of the body where cartilage is present.
3.Ewing Sarcoma:
Affects the bones or the soft tissue around the bones, and is more common in children and adolescents.
Soft Tissue Sarcoma
Soft tissue sarcomas are a group of cancers that originate in the connective tissues, including muscles, fat, blood vessels, and nerves. Some common types include:
1. Liposarcoma:
- Arises in fat tissue and can occur in any part of the body, but is most commonly found in the abdomen and thighs.
2.Leiomyosarcoma:
- A type of cancer that originates in smooth muscle tissue, which is found in organs like the stomach and uterus.
3.Rhabdomyosarcoma:
A rare cancer that develops in skeletal muscle tissue, often affecting children and adolescents.
4.Angiosarcoma:
A cancer that forms in the lining of blood vessels and lymph vessels, and can occur anywhere in the body.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis
Typically involves imaging tests (X-rays, CT scans, MRI, PET scan),biopsies.
– For skin cancers, dermatological examinations and biopsies are common
Treatment
Depending on the type and stage, treatments may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy.
'Surgery' Remains the mainstay of Treatment for these groups of Cancer.
Surgery can involve :
- Wide Local Excision and Reconstruction with Spilt Thickness Skin Graft or Local Flap Reconstruction.
- Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy and Dissection if suspected Nodal Involvement.
- Bone cancers may require for Implant insertion such as Megaprosthesis in cases of Joint Involvement.
